:la:

Also! Thank you to all the people who stopped by because of or commented on my Pokemon article. I can't tell you how amazing the outpouring of memories, opinion and ideas were. I adore fandom in all its aspects, and seeing so many people from so many stages of life, fans who have been in this fandom for nearly 20 years and those who just joined with X and Y, all in the same place, sharing and being excited together. It's amazing and warms my heart. You guys... you guys are my people.

Pokemon is Forever

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 21, 2014, 7:01 PM
An incongruous collection of people lined the sidewalk outside the local video game retailer just before opening on March 6th, 2011. The first in line were a pair of teenage boys in baggy jeans and band shirts, skateboards tucked under their arms. Next was a 9-year-old boy and his mother, followed by a 20-something female with spiky purple hair, a skull and crossbones on her belt. Then there was a young teenage girl, dressed all in yellow, red circles painted on her cheeks and a stuffed Pikachu tied to the handlebars of her scooter. Then a pair of young twins, a boy and a girl, with their mother, and three preorder tickets between them.  Two college boys waited impatiently while talking too loudly about their strategy for the upcoming game.  There was the 20-something couple, arms tangled about each other, their female friend eyeing the mid-thirties man behind her, who typed a business email on his cellphone. The line continued to grow…

After examining this strange collection of humanity, a middle age passerby stopped in his tracks unable to make sense of the diverse demographic gathered before him. "What are you all waiting for?" he questioned, staring in disbelief when the answer came back: Pokémon. He eyed the line and could not help but ask again: "All of you?"

That is the magic of Pokémon, there is no one demographic, there is no one type of Pokémon player. The 12-year-old who started playing “Red and Blue” is now the nostalgic 30-year-old who still has his original Red and refuses to let his collection fall behind. At the same time, the magic of the world of Pokémon has not been lost on the new generation, as wireless gameplay, charming mini games and tantalizing secrets draw in new players.

Fans around the globe are once again eagerly awaiting the release of the newest Pokémon games, “Alpha Sapphire” and “Omega Ruby.”  Nintendo has been gearing up fans for the new releases and encouraging preorders for months, offering players who make the trek to a local gaming store the codes that can be redeemed for rare Pokémon and game items, including the new “Megastones” and the previously unreleased legendary Pokémon, Diancie.  The promotions appear to have been effective, with over one million copies preordered in Japan alone.  Pokémaniacs are clearly eager to return to the Hoenn Region once again.

Hoenn revisited by zerudez Hoenn Starters by LadyKuki  Diancie by PinkGermy

The settings of Pokémon games have gone more global in the recent games. The Unova Region, where Pokémon “Black and White” takes place is based on America and features huge cities and the megamart, while the most recent “X and Y” games were set in the Kalos Region, which was based on France, boasting beatiful flowers and an Eiffel Tower-inspired attraction at the central of the city. However, this time Pokémon is returning home with Hoenn, which was inspired by Kyushu, the main island of Japan. Hoenn is also the home of the Pokémon that was made famous by the infamous Internet meme: I Herd U Liek Mudkips.

“Alpha Sapphire” and “Omega Ruby” will be the second games to feature Mega Evolution, a special kind of evolution which allows certain Pokémon to temporarily "mega evolve" with the aid of the megastone, an item which the Pokémon must hold in order reach mega evolve status. While “Alpha Sapphire” and “Omega Ruby” do not offer any new Pokémon for trainers to collect, they will considerably increase the catalog of Pokémon which can mega evolve.

Much to the delight of the global population, these games will also have a worldwide release, allowing players world-wide an equal start on their collection. Pokémon “X and Y” were localized to different languages and regions as they were developed, allowing these titles to be the the first Nintendo published games to be released to all regions at once. It is exciting to see this new tradition emerge.

STILL CATCHING 'EM ALL
Eighteen years after the release of Pokemon “Red” and “Green” in Japan, the franchise is still going strong, thanks largely to easy yet addictive gameplay, storytelling and adaptability. While “Alpha Sapphire” and “Omega Ruby” are not, strictly speaking, new games (the original games were titled “Pokemon Ruby” and “Pokemon Sapphire” and were released in 2002 and 2003) these remakes offer players a much more immersive world, with radically different graphics, more monsters to catch, more items to collect, easier social interaction with other Pokemon players, as well as minigames and activities to lose themselves in. Pokémon, like its monsters, continues to evolve, and in so doing, has deftly managed to keep the interest of veteran players and attracted a whole new generation of gamers.

EVOLVING
Pokémon “X and Y” versions, released on October 12, 2013, introduced a new game engine, transporting the world of Pokémon out of stubby pixel characters to smoothly animated 3D renderings of characters. These newly rendered characters are capable of doing so much more than their predecessors including tricks on roller blades, unique rock climbing and Pokémon riding animations, to name a few. The new graphics allowed players the ability to customize their avatars and feature those avatars in Trainer PR videos. These videos allowed players to star in their very own mini-movies utilizing various expressions, poses, backdrops, music, effects, and text. Meanwhile, Photo Spots encourage players to take the time to truly admire the new graphics by way of  a virtual camera. Lacking an auto focus but offering a variety of lenses, filters, and different focusing options, the camera speaks to would-be photographers and allows players of all skill levels to share online photos they’ve taken of their avatar and the beautifully rendered scenery.

Ever embracing of pop culture, Pokémon is combining the cosplay trend with their most famous monster.  “Alpha Sapphire” and “Omega Ruby” will be the first games to offer the Cosplay Pikachu! This adorable Pikachu is sure to be the star of the returning Talent Show, and will have a variety of outfits. Cosplay Pikachu will acquire special moves based upon which costumes they wear, and, like any truly dedicated cosplayer, will appear in costume even in battle.

GAMEPLAY
While the old tried-and-true formula of Pokémon has remained constant, the recent games have brought so much more to the world of Pokémon. Players still start out selecting one of three starter Pokémon, battling their way across the map, collecting gym badges, and capturing wayward monsters as they go. For many players, however, it is not until after the main storyline of the game has come to a close that the real game begins.

Sophisticated algorithms allow players to carefully, but deliberately breed an elite class of battle-ready monsters. These mechanics have been tweaked over the years by the game developers themselves in order to encourage players to legitimately breed the best Pokémon rather than resorting to cheating or 'hacking' the game to achieve these near-perfect Pokémon. While the odds are long and the process is time consuming, those dedicated are able to predictably hatch monsters with unique moves, specific "natures" which will boots a desired stat, and even control what kind of Pokéball the new Pokémon will live in.

Wild Pokemon living in the City by Ninja-Jamal Pokemon : Breeder routine by Sa-Dui Pokemon : Fishing by Sa-Dui

There is also the hunt for the elusive shiny Pokémon. Shiny Pokémon have colors which are different from their common Pokémon brethren, their bodies sparkle when they enter battle, and they are very rare. As of the Pokémon “X and Y” games, players have only a 1 in 4096 chance of naturally encountering a shiny Pokémon. Some gamers report having completed two whole Pokémon games before finding their first shiny. The Poké Radar, an item unlocked only after the main game has been completed, allows players to 'chain' specific Pokémon battles in order to drastically increase their chances of finding a shiny Pokémon. Meanwhile, breeders use the Masuda method, which consists of breeding two Pokémon who originate from different real-world countries, to drastically increase their odds of hatching a shiny from 1 in 4096 to 1 in 1365.

GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALL
Pokémon could not have chosen a better slogan to promote their game, as there is no question that the obsessive desire to catch them all is a major drive for many players. Pokémon games are released in paired versions, and some Pokémon are version exclusives, found in one version of the game, but not the other. Some Pokémon have forms which cannot be found naturally in game and can only be unlocked if they are traded from one player to another. Some Pokémon have unique appearances which change depending on the season, sometimes the same Pokémon will have a different appearance depending on its gender, while still other Pokémon have a different appearance depending on the region your game originates from.  Some Pokémon will only evolve if the player has raised the friendship of their monster, by traveling with it in their team, or spending time in the Amie mini-game, where players pet their Pokémon and hand-feed them Poké Puff pastries.

PKMN: Joltik Chu by Zilleniose Welcome to Kalos by Oniwanbashu Mega Lord of the Sky by RenePolumorfous

Then there are the legendary Pokemon, which are rare and difficult to find, often version exclusive with only one monster found per game. Some Pokémon are event exclusives, where gamers must bring their 3DS and Pokémon game to a certain real-world location within the correct time frame order to download a special Pokémon. Some Pokémon are distributed via the Wireless feature on the Nintendo 3DS and are offered in celebration of a holiday or special event.  For the hardcore collectors, the game does not end when the credits roll, not even when the Pokédex is complete, and all 719 Pokémon have been recorded. For the truly dedicated, the game is not over until every Pokémon, every color variation, every gender variation, every shiny variation and every special event Pokémon has been acquired.

Pokémon also rewards long time players, allowing them to pass their Pokémon forward to new games, so trainers do not have to start all over with each new game, while in-game mechanics prevent trainers from using previously trained Pokémon to power through the story. In the past this was a rather cumbersome process, but sending your favorite and most rare Pokémon to your new game is now easier than ever thanks to Pokémon Bank. Pokémon Bank is a subscription service players can purchase for $5 a year, and acts as a virtual safety box. Players are able to store up to 3,000 Pokémon online for safe keeping and transfer those Pokémon to any Pokémon game inserted into the 3DS system that Bank has been installed on. Trainers no longer need to worry about losing that super rare legendary due to a lost game cartridge.

SOCIAL
While Pokémon may be a one-player game, the game play is anything but isolating. Through the wireless connection of the 3DS, players can, at any time, see the icons of their friends and random online passersby, battle or trade with just a few clicks, or even offer a player a stat boost to help them in their game. Voice chat enables friends to connect over long distances, groups of players can trade unhatched eggs, and even those who are offline can still impact those actively playing by offering to trade a Pokémon via the Global Trade Station.

Friend Link by RacieB Trade for Mizu by forgottenpantaloons Pkmn- SERIOUS TRAINERS by meru-chan

Across the Internet, Pokémon communities have become common, from groups here on DeviantArt, to Reddit and Tumblr and dedicated Pokémon fan sites. Players swap friend codes in order to explore Friend Safaris, where rare Pokémon with boosted stats wait to be found. Trades for Pokémon, both legendary and common are negotiated and breeding extras are given away to help out future breeders. The days of needing a link cable, a wish and a prayer in order to trade are long gone.  It has never been easier to interact and trade with other Pokémon players.

Players are also rewarded for finding other Pokémon players offline. Nintendo 3DS systems are able to swap information with any other nearby 3DS unit. Pokémon is able to recognize other Pokémon games and will reward players who pass by other Pokémon players with Poké Miles, points can later be redeemed online for in-game items.

Even battle is a social event in Pokémon. Wireless competitions are held regularly, with different rules dictating which Pokemon and which Pokémon teams can be entered. Gaming stores and individual groups often organize in-person Pokémon tournaments so gamers can see how their Pokémon teams stand up against other local trainers. The annual Pokémon World Championship is a televised, narrated global competition where Pokemon awards over $100,000 in scholarships to video gamers and card players. The 2014 tournament featured over 500 players from 30 countries, and the tournament winner, Se Jun Park, won a surprising victory with his Pachirisu, spawning a flurry of art featuring the adorable electric rodent.

2014wcs Pachirisu by Dpik Commission: Pokemon Battle by mattandrews Welcome to the secret base! by hinakanin

Pokémon “Alpha Sapphire” and “Omega Ruby” will make social activity and sharing even easier thanks to the inclusion of Super Secret Bases. Each trainer will have their own clubhouse-like room which they will be able to customize with items such as Pokémon plushies. They will also be able to play a ‘capture the flag’ style game with other Pokémon trainers and will be able to easily share their clubhouse and invite others to play simply by publishing a QR code. Visiting clubhouses will allow players to either battle or to offer a stat boost to assist the others in their game.

VARIETY
If the idea of walking across the world and throwing balls at monsters simply does not appeal to you, don't worry! You may yet find yourself a Pokémon fan. In the “Pokémon Mystery Dungeon” series, you can play as a Pokémon, teaming up with other monsters as you navigate quests and help other Pokémon in an ever-changing dungeon crawler game. Or maybe you prefer strategy games? “Pokémon Conquest” may pique your interest. Here you can conquer a feudal-era world, find the perfect Pokémon to pair with your warriors, and navigate various terrain in a grid-based tactical game. Or claim ownership of no one Pokémon and travel as a ranger, working with and quickly releasing Pokémon as you help better the world in “Pokémon Ranger”.

Pinball fans may find a fondness of “Pokémon Pinball”, “Pokémon Rumble” may appeal to those those who like action games. Lose yourself in the puzzle game “Pokémon Battle Trozei”, or brush up on your strategy as you play the long-lived “Pokémon Trading Card” game which can also be played online and on iOS. “Pokémon Art Academy” is available to entertain and teach the artistically inclined. If you're just not into games, you could always just kick back and watch the long-running Pokémon anime, one of the 16 movies, or pick up any of the Pokémon mangas. Several Pokémon and their iconic Pokémon Trainer are also featured in “Super Smash Bros.”, for those who feel the need to watch Lucario beat the snot out of Bowser or Wario.

Even if you are not inclined to catch them all, Pokémon has worked hard to offer something of interest to every kind of player. Pokemon has a whole host of games, features, minigames, strategies and events beyond those featured in this article.  Whether you are picking out your very first starter or if you are a master with a completed Pokedex, join us in a return to the world of Pokémon!  A new adventure and new evolutions await us all in Hoenn, and it looks like Team Magma and Team Aqua are up to no good once more, so let's go defend the world once again!

These past few weeks have been crazy, exciting, inspiring and reminded me just how amazing people in my life are. I'm often humbled and inspired by how giving, supportive and amazing people can be. Thank you to everyone who puts up with me, you are all amazing.

Had a bit of a health scare with the kitty, but he's ship-shape again, and I'm able to breathe easy. He's still an asshole, but he's my asshole. :giggle:

I've decided to start on a personal project that probably won't see the light of day for at least a year, but new challenges and projects are always exciting! Even if they're far, far off on the horizon.

There are some cool things launching on the site, and much more to come! :la:

Aaand also, if you've ever wanted to get involved in :devmcadotpables:, now's the time! There's a super special, custom Deviron up for auction, it ends tomorrow, so hurry!

As of today, my account is 12 years old. My account is almost old enough to have an account here. :slow:

It's been an incredible twelve years, and I wanted to thank everyone who has made this journey so amazing. From my friends from Neopets (OMFG, Neopets? That was so long ago! :faint:) who introduced me to this site, to my forum buddies to the volunteers and staffers who made the plethora of amazing things, leading up to this moment:

Thank you all. I cannot put into words just how much DeviantArt means to me and how much it has changed my life.

I can't wait to see what's next. :D

My DeviantArt Story

Journal Entry: Thu Aug 7, 2014, 3:46 PM
Wow, 14 years is such a long time! And as of the 21st, I will have been part of the community for 12 of those years! :faint: DeviantArt has seen me through so much, and it's time for me to tell you all a story about it. :D

I first found DA when I was in college, writing fantasy short stories and looking for feedback for my (terrible) drawings to go with my words.

Daria - College Life by eve-bolt Postapocalyptic Fantasy by MartaNael

To say life was different back then is an understatement, I was in a school I hated, in a relationship I wasn't very happy in, and fighting my boyfriend in said relationship because he did not like my fascination with fantasy or my Internet addiction. It was in no small part because of DeviantArt that I found the courage to end a relationship with the person I thought would be "the one" and face post-college life on my own and made the trek from the frozen, dark lands known as Michigan during fall/winter, and headed back to Texas!

2GAG - The Breakup by Drunken-Novice  Texas by incogburo

Eventually, DeviantArt sent out a request for moderators to their brand new, shiny chat system, dAmn. Eager to get involved, I applied and was accepted. That started two years as a volunteer, during that time I did all kinds of things. Chat Mod, DD selector, Gallery Director, PV... all of which now fall under the umbrella of Community Volunteer. Eventually, my department was shifted from volunteer to a paid position, and so I became an employee of DeviantArt! It was a happy day!

Volunteer by smokedsalmon55 Celebrate !!! by Niking

Since that time, I have moved to California in order to work out of HQ, I have attended and spoke at several cons, made amazing, lifelong friends and been able to do the thing I have always wanted to do: Help artists. Every day brings something new and different to my screen, I am surrounded by amazing, creative and hilarious people. Long story short: I found where I belong. As of the 21st of this month, I will have been a part of the DeviantArt community for 12 years, needles to say, it has been a huge part of my life, and of my growth as a person. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey with me, I wouldn't trade it for the world.

OMG Comic-Con! (Video Update)

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 28, 2014, 9:20 PM
San Diego Comic-Con was so amazing this year, I am exhausted but elated. I hardly even know where to start! Be ready, guys, this journal will be full of pictures and feels!

I got to see amazing old friends once again, which is one of my favorite parts of Comic-Con. So many artists who are not only stupid talented, but also terribly friendly and just too kind for words, who I only get to see once a year. Thanks to everyone in the Alley and at their own booths who take the time to chat! It totally makes my fangirl heart happy.

akreon and vesner flew all the way out for the convention, these girls are so amazingly fun, guys, I can't even explain it. They signed a Milk for the Ugly poster! The poster is so gorgeous, a lot of people who came by the DeviantArt booth thought it was a movie poster! We had a great time at the DevMeet.... don't worry, ladies. I won't post that picture we took together. ;) Despite my hopes, I didn't get to run into dauntingfire or reapersun, but  got I did get to meet both Thiefoworld and alicexz. Alice's hair is so pink!

Deadpool and Fella by damphyr

Working the Alley was just great, and we even had Fella come by this year! It was so great to watch con attendees take time out of their floor time to sit and draw, share their DeviantArt experiences with us, and (often) just be nerdy with us! This year, we handed out ribbons, buttons and two different posters. We also sponsored Artists' Alley and hosted five different panels.

...Speaking of panels. :omfg:

aunjuli and I hosted a panel together! It was so very much fun, and all the work that went into it was totally worth it. Juli was amazing and so collected. And those who attended. OMG everyone who came was so great!! I can't even put into words how great it was to be sharing stories, and talking about fandom, and being in a room full of people who understood... who got it. If you came, please give me a shout! I want to brag on how awesome all of you were :D

aunjuli did a gorgeous little write up about our panel here, and IreneAdler76 took amazing photos of it for us. We talked shipping, we worked on our fandom vocabulary, we looked in awe at so much amazing art by DeviantArt people, and then...

Then we built a ship. It was a ship that involved Capt America, a Dalek and Bucky Barns all having a romantic encounter in the ball pit. It was amazing, thank you to everyone who joined in the madlibs-style fun! Extra thanks to DeevElliott for all the advice, makepictures for all the encouragement and photos, :devdevIreneAdler76: for all the pictures and dealing with my insanity, spyed for the intro, techgnotic for the intro, advice and making it all happen... and of course, to aunjuli for doing the thing with me! It really was a childhood dream coming true.

And then... then there was the cosplay!
So many DeviantArt staffers went in costume this year, including LaurenKitsune and TharBeVikings, but I don't have any good pictures of their costumes! :noes: What I do have is madizzlee as Link, IreneAdler76 as Remy LeBeau, pinguino as Harley Quinn and then myself as Blink from Days of Future Past!

Maddy Link by damphyr Gambit, Harley, Blink by damphyr Gambit Blink 3 by damphyr

I worked so hard on this costume! It was my most ambitious cosplay yet, and considering I went into this project not knowing how to sew, never having worked with foam and never having styled a wig before, I think it came out pretty well. I ended up hand stitching over 4,000 beads! Thanks to everyone who posed for photos with me! You all had amazing costumes.

It was such a great time in costume, even if the boots kind of killed my feet. I even got up the nerve to get up on stage at the Marvel booth's cosplay contest!

Blink5 by damphyr Blink2 by damphyr Cerebro by damphyr Blink4 by damphyr  Blink3 by damphyr

All in all, it was an amazing time. Thanks to everyone who said hi or even just followed along on my twitter! (Which is kaydamphyr, btw) It was a year I will never forget, thank you all for sharing it with me. I have so many feels about this year! It's difficult to top your first Comic-Con, because.... it's your first Comic-Con, but outside of that, I think this may have been my favorite. Time to head back to work and normal life, which just seems so dull after all this!

If you're in any of these photos, please give me a shout! I want to send people to your page so they can see the awesome things you've made.

That's all for now, I need hot tea and vegetables. The road to comic-con recovery is a slow one.

UPDATE: I made it into a cosplay music video! Thanks to Franchesco for pointing it out. You rock, man.
I'm at 2:40 doing a kick. Woohoo, didn't fall on my ass! It's a real risk in those boots.

Comic-Con 2014, here we come!

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 14, 2014, 11:42 PM
In case you didn't get the message: Don't Panic! Prep the TARDIS! Call the Banners! Comic-Con is (almost) here! :la:

I'll be heading down to San Diego with a brand new, shiny costume to man the DeviantArt booth, meet and greet deviants, hang out with fellow fans and, this year... co-hosting a panel! :faint: aunjuli and I will be hosting a panel Sunday at 12:30, discussing fandom and all things ship! We hope you'll join us, if you're heading to Comic-Con.

If not, not to fear! We'll have lots of stories and updates. I'll also be updating live this year... I've joined Twitter! :omfg: This is a new and horrifying thing for me, DeviantArt is the only social network I've ever been a part of. Please excuse me if I fail a little at Twitter etiquette. Give me a shout at @Kaydamphyr. While I'm stumbling through Twitter, I'm so excited to be able to share pictures, events and the whole Comic-Con experience in real time.

And now, I must scramble back to my soldering iron... this cosplay isn't going to light itself!

Thank you All!

Journal Entry: Wed Jun 25, 2014, 11:28 AM
Thanks everyone for all the birthday wishes! I had a lovely day and made some real progress on my little project. I wanted to give a shout-out and a thank you to kozispoon, who drew an adorable toon version of me, which is now the header on my main page. It is so friggin' cute and I adore it. It's nice to have a new graphic there, since my old one said $damphyr... and the $ is no longer in use on the site. :XD: Oops.

Not much more to update with just now. Labyrinth Ball is fast approaching, and I'm so excited to get my owl on again. I've added more feathers and more lights this year, hoping it'll be the most glamorous year so far! :la:

I hope to have some exciting things to update you all with in the very near future, but for now, this is all I have. Be good to each other and have a great day!

THAT day

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 17, 2014, 8:11 PM
Yep, it's that time again... at least it's my time again. Time to celebrate another trip around the sun. As of 3AM, in 7 short hours, I'm officially another year older. I can't say I'm doing a bit celebration this year, but my mother was in town for weeks--literal weeks--so I'm kind of socialed out. :XD: I plan to spend the day chilling at home with Cosmos, video games, my kitty, and working on a little something for Comic-con. It's gonna be a good day! :D

Hope the day sees you all well, if you're so inclined, please raise a glass to me on my b-day. I'll have a drink to you, in return. :D

Be good to each other!

Hey all!

Just wanted to pimp a little project I've had my eye on for a while now... :iconflightrising: is open for registration, for today only! Head on over to flightrising.com/ and adopt yourself a dragon! My screen name there is also damphyr, so feel free to say hi, though I've literally just signed up and have not had the time to get to know the secrets of the site, so I won't be able to help you too much just yet. You can check out their dA group or just poke over to neondragon's page to see some previews of their dragons. So go on, check it out and show 'em a little dA love!

Free Comic Book Day!

Journal Entry: Sat May 3, 2014, 6:12 PM
It is, once again, one of my favorite times of the year... Free Comic Book Day! This year, myself, kozispoon and her hubby hit up three stores! Well... two and a half. Our first stop was... Meltdown Comics!

We were greeted by these awesome young ladies handing out free comics, lanyards and Hellboy candy! Check out the goods!
Photo 2(11) by damphyr
Meltdown also had pros with accessories and candy, as well as a cute little craft fair out back! We hung out, chatted, shopped, posed and Kozi dropped off her FCBD book.

Our next stop was Golden Apple Comics... well. At least that was the plan. Golden Apple shoppers were serious about getting their free books! :o

The line was literally wrapped around the block and not moving at any real speed and another stop to make, we waved hello to GA's life sized R2D2 model and headed off to our next stop, House of Secrets.

There was also a line at HoS, but not nearly as long... and we had entertainment! A Joker cosplayer entertained the children waiting for their comics, especially those in costume. Spider Girl rolled up on her four wheeler and was very not amused when the Joker tried to steal it. Fortuately, his evil plan was foiled by the appearance of Batman.

With stacks of comics in hand and having successfully acquired a hard cover Mouse Guard, we bid the comic shop a fond farewell and went to page through our loot and eat some delicious soft tacos. It was another great year of seeing new, young and old fans all coming together to celebrate our love of comics. Thanks to all the stores who put on events, gave away books and invited artists and cosplayers out. It was great, as always!

Wondercon!

Journal Entry: Mon Apr 21, 2014, 11:17 AM
Saturday was a very fun day, when myself, IreneAdler76 and spotted wandered off to Wondercon Anaheim! I had not planned on going, and only realized I had a ticket and a ride on Thursday afternoon, so it was an  unexpected pleasure. Fortunately, my Jack Harkness costume is so easy to throw together, I was still able to attend in costume, even if my hair was not terribly Jack-like.

Wandering Artists Alley was a blast, as always. I got to see lots of old friends and picked up a few snazzy pieces of art, too! I also left with a ton of inspiration, the cosplayers there were amazing, accurate and/or so original, I simply cannot wait to get started on my next costume. :ninja: Thanks to everyone who said hi, asked for photos and/or stopped to let me take photos. Also, Capt Jack says a great big Hello~! to the 300+ people I streetpassed with my 3DS!

Here's some of my favorite pics of the con.

Buckles!

Journal Entry: Tue Mar 11, 2014, 11:37 PM
I still am not sure how it's the year 2014, much less three months into it! It's been a busy, crazy but good time. I have been Pokemonning and the book I've long been waiting for, the second in Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series, Words of Radiance just came out. I've had a very difficult time putting this book down, it will be over far too soon.

Speaking of far too soon, it's already time to start looking forward to the summer, when I will be all costumed out. Labyrinth Ball falls so close to Comic-Con and I always find myself scrambling to have costumes ready for both events. I've long been gathering materials and getting ready for these, but one particular piece for one of my costumes continues to elude me. I figured I would give a shout out to see if anyone well versed in ordering items like this may have a clue. It's a long shot, but hey, a girl can dream.

Buckle by damphyr

I am looking for something very close to this. A metal side release buckle with the little wing releases, not the push-in-the-sides kind. I know, it looks very similar to the plastic backpack/dog collar buckles that are cheap and everywhere... I am a crazy person and am not satisfied with those. I am after both metal and this kind of shape. Just to make things extra tricky, I really want these buckles in black or a very dark, brushed/not glossy metal, and most everywhere seems to want me to buy at least 500 of them. I need... three. :XD:

I've found some similar, but more complex and pricy ones made by Cobra, which I may resort to. Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, my Google-fu has failed me, and you may be my only hope!

Anyone else working on costumes/cosplays? I may be considering attempting contacts this summer, for the first time. I've never been able to get them in before, so we'll see. :fear: I'm such a wuss when it comes to putting things in my eyes. I need to decide soonish, because I need to make an appointment with my optometrist if I decide to attempt it. What big costume/cosplay challenges have you faced?

The Wind Rises!

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 21, 2014, 10:50 AM
As you may or may not know, I am a huge Miyazaki fan. Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite movies ever, and Kiki's Delivery Service has been warming my heart since I discovered anime. I won't even mention Grave of the Fireflies, because I am literally unable to watch that movie again, it broke my heart so thoroughly. It is for this reason that I greet Miyazaki's retirement movie, The Wind Rises, with mixed feelings. I don't want him to stop making these gorgeous tales, animated in such a beautiful way, but I do believe Studio Ghibli can successfully carry on without him. I plan to brave the ehater with screaming kids (uuugh) to check out The Wind Rises, and I'm beyond giddy that dA is hosting a contest for it!

Check it out here!

How about you, do you have a favorite Miyazaki/Ghibli movie?

The Pokemon Obsession

Journal Entry: Sun Feb 9, 2014, 9:22 PM

Wow. So, 2014 has come in like a lion. I won't go into details, but it's been a healthy mix of good and not so good.

...well! That didn't take long! You guys are amazing. :D BEHOLD!

BRB, life is made. If anyone is interested in trading Kyogre and/or Arceus for keeps, give me a shout. As for now? Life is good, and I can start farming shinies. Hurray for shinies! :la:

One of the things to finally arrive? Pokemon Bank! ...That's a mixed bucket, as it turns out. The app is far from as useful, intuitive and user friendly as it could be, but hey, it gets the job of getting Pokemon from the old games into my new one done. Speaking of getting Pokemon into the new game...
Untitled Drawing by damphyr

I am two Pokemon short from a perfect dex... and sadly one of them is holding me back from a Shiny Amulet/Shiny Charm. I need this. I really freaking need this. So, I'm on the hunt for two legendary Pokemon!

damphy is currently seeking: Kyogre and Arceus

While Arceus is obviously the more rare/in demand Pokemon, I really need a Kyogre in order to get my charm. I would love to do a trade-trade back, just to fill the dex entry, will also talk about trading for good, if you're interested in trading for keeps. If it is trade/trade back, I have a whole pokedex minus those two to offer. If you're looking to trade for keeps, I have several legendaries and/or shinies I'm willing to part with.

If you know someone who has one of these and send them my way, I will be grateful and will happily give you something special as a thank you/finders fee. I'm just really really desperate for a Kyogre ASAP.  If there is a pokemon you really need or want, I'll do my best to help out in return.... even if the 'return' is just helping spread the word.

Thanks!

Comikaze!

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 1, 2013, 11:37 AM
Heyo, deviants!

These last few weeks have been a whirlwind, but the end is near and I am so looking forward to Comikaze! Will anyone be attending? I will be roaming the halls on Saturday dressed as Captain Jack. If anyone spots the dashing hero, please do say hello! If you play Pokemon X or Y, be sure to say the secret password Sewer Chic and I will give you a rather lame Pokemon... but it comes with Pokerus so you can power level your EVs!

I hope everyone had a very happy Halloween and that November brings only good things.

Be good to each other!

The great Pokemon Debate

Journal Entry: Tue Oct 8, 2013, 7:46 PM
Pokemon has been a huge part of my life since the original Red and Blue games. My brother and I both begged, whined and pleaded until my parents (who are amazing!) got us each a copy for our giant brick of an original Game Boy system. I got blue, as you can probably guess from my journal skin. :XD:

Blue was fun, and I went the extra mile and beat the whole game over again in Yellow, falling for the gimmick of paying for the game all over again just to have Pikachu follow you around hook, line and sinker. Totally worth every penny, I should add.

But then... I fell away from the series, and I really can't give you a reason other than a combination of school and not liking the starter Pokemon. Pokemon was competing for my attention during college, when I was extremely short on both time and money, and against games such as Dragon Quest Monster, which just had a much bigger and more interesting breeding system... not to mention randomly generated dungeons! The DQM series, sadly, did not stand the test of time, and I did not come back into the Pokemon fold until Emerald.

It turned out that my timing could not have been better, as the Generation IV games reignited the lukewarm interest I had in Emerald. I played the pants off of Pearl and SoulSilver, transferring my Emerald Pokemon over and managed a 100% complete Pokedex. Black was another exciting chapter, watching the story line grow up was pretty much what I needed. And I was lucky enough to transfer all my important Diamond Pokemon over before my copy of Diamond was stolen from my bag at a convention. :faint: Talk about luck!

...Then there was Black 2. By this time, I was used to the style of the game, and while the graphics were interesting the first go round, they were gaudy, janky and jagged to my eyes in Black 2. I appreciated the nods to the first games, but found it all too familiar and thus tedious. Still, I am nothing if not determined, and beat the game and completed my Pokedex yet again.

Then there was the X Y announcement. Most fans reacted with joy. I felt my heart sink a little.

While I was not a fan of the pixels overlayed over 3D graphics of Black/White... the idea of the game going all 3D is even worse in my mind. Camera angles and the addition of 3D graphics has seen me bow out of more than one fandom, including Zelda. There is little I hate more than having to dick with a camera in the middle of a dungeon or while exploring a field, for some reason it simply enrages me. :slow: I'd played with the Black/White Pokedex, I'd seen these monsters in 3D graphics... and I hated it. So within hours after hearing the announcement of X and Y I simply stopped paying attention to Pokemon. I had no interest in this new game. It made me sad, but it really was that simple.

Last week, the IMs and in person questions started. Which game was I getting? Was I excited about (this spoiler) or (that spoiler)?? Which starter am I getting??

It was the spoiler questions that got me looking at the game again. :XD: I'm still not a fan of the new graphics, many of the lines still look janky and painfully ugly 3D, despite the cell shade. Look, folks, I won't like. I hate 3D graphics. I play some games that have them, but I find them ugly as hell, either over textured or under textured, jagged at the edges and just generally terribly proportioned and thus terrifying. There's something about 3D graphics that my brain hates, and it's true for everything from Pokemon to WoW to How To Train Your Dragon. I can tolerate some, I just really hate looking at it, thus I mourn the dead of my cute little pixel monsters. :(

...but then they added Pokemon Amie. I have mentioned that some of my best memories are Pokemon Yellow already... and I am that idiot who spent hours in Amity Square, giggling like a loon every time I talked to the Pokemon following me around. So,  as silly of an addition Amie is... that may be the deciding factor in if I get this game or not. Also, I need solid confirmation one way or another if Nintendo has added a 'jump' feature to this game, because if I have to start jumping holes and timing leaps onto platforms, I will ragequit the game on the spot. :XD:

So here I am, eying my DS and wondering if I'm going to have a new game in the nearish future. The 649 monsters all lined up in numerical order in my PC are all waiting to go on their next adventure, and I'm not entirely sure I'm ready to take them there. I'm honestly shocked that they're shutting down the Dream World, rendering several key features of Black and White completely unusable, even customizing your Cgear and Pokedex cover! I wish I were as excited about this release as I have been past games... but maybe I'm just in that same slump that I found myself in during Generation II and III? And it's not even like I can wait until the game goes on sale, because Pokemon never goes down in price. :slow:

So, this is a huge long ramble of me walking down memory lane and wondering if Pokemon will be a part of my life in the future. I guess we'll find out soon enough! I'm keeping an eye out for sales (yeah, right), as I do think curiosity will get the best of me if the price is low enough. Thanks and sorry to all who made it this far, I honestly don't have a lot to say other than memories.

If you are getting the game... or if you want to but can't get it just yet, which version are you getting? Do please share gameplay experiences once you get your hands on it, I'm eager to see if the controls are more visually appealing and streamlined than in B/W, and again... jumping. >.<

Do you have a favorite Pokemon memory?
