Comic-Con 2014, here we come!In case you didn't get the message: Don't Panic! Prep the TARDIS! Call the Banners! Comic-Con is (almost) here!
I'll be heading down to San Diego with a brand new, shiny costume to man the DeviantArt booth, meet and greet deviants, hang out with fellow fans and, this year... co-hosting a panel! aunjuli and I will be hosting a panel Sunday at 12:30, discussing fandom and all things ship! We hope you'll join us, if you're heading to Comic-Con.
If not, not to fear! We'll have lots of stories and updates. I'll also be updating live this year... I've joined Twitter! This is a new and horrifying thing for me, DeviantArt is the only social network I've ever been a part of. Please excuse me if I fail a little at Twitter etiquette. Give me a shout at @Kaydamphyr. While I'm stumbling through Twitter, I'm so excited to be able to share pictures, events and the whole Comic-Con experience in real time.
And now, I must scramble
Thank you All!Thanks everyone for all the birthday wishes! I had a lovely day and made some real progress on my little project. I wanted to give a shout-out and a thank you to kozispoon, who drew an adorable toon version of me, which is now the header on my main page. It is so friggin' cute and I adore it. It's nice to have a new graphic there, since my old one said $damphyr... and the $ is no longer in use on the site. Oops.
Not much more to update with just now. Labyrinth Ball is fast approaching, and I'm so excited to get my owl on again. I've added more feathers and more lights this year, hoping it'll be the most glamorous year so far!
I hope to have some exciting things to update you all with in the very near future, but for now, this is all I have. Be good to each other and have a great day!
THAT dayYep, it's that time again... at least it's my time again. Time to celebrate another trip around the sun. As of 3AM, in 7 short hours, I'm officially another year older. I can't say I'm doing a bit celebration this year, but my mother was in town for weeks--literal weeks--so I'm kind of socialed out. I plan to spend the day chilling at home with Cosmos, video games, my kitty, and working on a little something for Comic-con. It's gonna be a good day!
Hope the day sees you all well, if you're so inclined, please raise a glass to me on my b-day. I'll have a drink to you, in return.
Be good to each other!
Flight RisingHey all!
Just wanted to pimp a little project I've had my eye on for a while now... :iconflightrising: is open for registration, for today only! Head on over to http://flightrising.com/ and adopt yourself a dragon! My screen name there is also damphyr, so feel free to say hi, though I've literally just signed up and have not had the time to get to know the secrets of the site, so I won't be able to help you too much just yet. You can check out their dA group or just poke over to neondragon's page to see some previews of their dragons. So go on, check it out and show 'em a little dA love!
Free Comic Book Day!It is, once again, one of my favorite times of the year... Free Comic Book Day! This year, myself, kozispoon and her hubby hit up three stores! Well... two and a half. Our first stop was... Meltdown Comics!
We were greeted by these awesome young ladies handing out free comics, lanyards and Hellboy candy! Check out the goods!
Meltdown also had pros with accessories and candy, as well as a cute little craft fair out back! We hung out, chatted, shopped, posed and Kozi dropped off her FCBD book.
Our next stop was Golden Apple Comics... well. At least that was the plan. Golden Apple shoppers were serious about getting their free books!
The line was literally wrapped around the block and not movi
Wondercon!Saturday was a very fun day, when myself, IreneAdler76 and spotted wandered off to Wondercon Anaheim! I had not planned on going, and only realized I had a ticket and a ride on Thursday afternoon, so it was an unexpected pleasure. Fortunately, my Jack Harkness costume is so easy to throw together, I was still able to attend in costume, even if my hair was not terribly Jack-like.
Wandering Artists Alley was a blast, as always. I got to see lots of old friends and picked up a few snazzy pieces of art, too! I also left with a ton of inspiration, the cosplayers there were amazing, accurate and/or so original, I simply cannot wait to get started on my next costume. Thanks to everyone who said hi, asked for photos and/or stopped to let me take photos. Also, Capt Jack says a great big Hello~! to the 300+ people I streetpassed with my 3DS!
Here's some of my favorite pics of the con.
Buckles!I still am not sure how it's the year 2014, much less three months into it! It's been a busy, crazy but good time. I have been Pokemonning and the book I've long been waiting for, the second in Brandon Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series, Words of Radiance just came out. I've had a very difficult time putting this book down, it will be over far too soon.
Speaking of far too soon, it's already time to start looking forward to the summer, when I will be all costumed out. Labyrinth Ball falls so close to Comic-Con and I always find myself scrambling to have costumes ready for both events. I've long been gathering materials and getting ready for these, but one particular piece for one of my costumes continues to elude me. I figured I would give a shout out to see if anyone well versed in ordering items like this may have a clue. It's a long shot, but hey, a girl can dream.
I am looking for something
The Wind Rises! As you may or may not know, I am a huge Miyazaki fan. Howl's Moving Castle is one of my favorite movies ever, and Kiki's Delivery Service has been warming my heart since I discovered anime. I won't even mention Grave of the Fireflies, because I am literally unable to watch that movie again, it broke my heart so thoroughly. It is for this reason that I greet Miyazaki's retirement movie, The Wind Rises, with mixed feelings. I don't want him to stop making these gorgeous tales, animated in such a beautiful way, but I do believe Studio Ghibli can successfully carry on without him. I plan to brave the ehater with screaming kids (uuugh) to check out The Wind Rises, and I'm beyond giddy that dA is hosting a contest for it!
Check it out here!
How about you, do you have a favorite Miyazaki/Ghibli movie?

Check your Angles
Avoid unflattering angles, don't frame your model with their arms or legs chopped off unless it works for the image. If in doubt, fully frame them and do the chopping afterwards in post-processing! Don't forget to check that the tops of their heads and their feet are in focus. Missing feet are disconcerting!
Be the Director
As the Photographer, most people will be looking to you for direction. There's no time to be shy when you're behind the camera! Keep calm to help your model remain relaxed but make sure they're not made to feel awkward if you lack giving instruction. Pose them well, avoid direct bright sunlight and check out your background.
Eye contact...or not
Eye contact isn't always necessary, in fact candid journalistic style photographs often work best. Your subject doesn't have to be looking directly at the camera for it to be a successful shoot, but yo
Lighting in Portrait PhotographyPeople and Portraits week
I'm writing this tutorial of sorts, for all of you portrait photographers out there seeking advice about the lighting in your photographs. First off let me be clear in saying that I am no expert, or rather I do not claim to be, I sometimes do things in unusual ways, and my tips and advice are definitely not the only ones you should follow. This journal is just me giving you my take on how to get great lighting for your shots
1. Never shoot when the sun is at its highest peak.
Depending on where you live and your climate, this might vary, but I usually never shoot between the hours of 12-4 unless I'm shooting indoors, or it's a cloudy day. If you're doing an outdoors shoot and the sun is blasting on your model, you are very unlikely to get good results. Not only will it be uncomfortable for your model, and make it difficult to pose with a natural expression (sun in your eyes, worst feeling in the world),

Haikyuu!! (ハイキュー!!), a manga and anime series that focuses around volleyball player Shoyo Hinata as he strives to become the best he can, has gained popularity both in and out of Japan since its manga debut in 2012, and more recently due to the anime adaptation that began airing in April 2014.

Nine TimesI saw him nine times.
The first time we were both sitting in the room together, getting ready to take the math test that would determine our placement. I was scatterbrained and throwing things around, trying to find the pencils that I had known I would need but had still just tossed in my purse. He was lounging backwards in his chair, looking for all the world as though he didn’t have a single care in the world, including the upcoming test. It annoyed me, that I was frantic and ready to scream, while someone else could be that relaxed.
I tested out of the class.
I don’t know if he did.
The second time I saw him, it was a few months after I arrived on campus. He was the one rushing and frantic this time, running across the square. He was probably late for class, though I had no way of knowing for sure. I was already lost in my own thoughts and ideas, deciding on my major and convincing people that yes, this is what I really want to do with my life. If they weren
